How It Works: Installing Precast Plank at The Meridian

Our multifamily project in downtown Thiensville, The Meridian, has reached the precast concrete plank installation stage. With a very tight site in this busy downtown area, construction planning, logistics and safety are critical.

These photos capture the crane at work, lifting precast planks from semi-trucks that back up to the crane. Full-size planks can weigh between 6,000 and 10,000 pounds. Once placed, they are secured by pinning and grouting. A particular challenge on this site is keeping all crews working safely while precast installation is underway. The team addresses this by shortening the crane’s swing radius and changing the swing direction from west to east or east to west.

The planks will form the apartment building’s first floor, with a concrete topping poured over them. Interior and exterior wood wall panels are then set on the plank and topping. It’s exciting to see The Meridian take shape with the help of skilled trades working together to put the building’s first floor in place.
